Municipality self-assessment portal and SALGA adminstration dashboard.

THE PROBLEM

Converting a well-established and trusted municipality self-assessment process, from being manual to a digital online portal.

When I joined the team, the lead developer had already started coding the application. It practically had no frontend to interact with and was about 15% done, backend-wise.

My greatest challenge was figuring out how to design an application and develop it at the same time. Design, research and development were running concurrently, a process I am not accustomed to.

​

Iterations to both design and application code were done on the fly. In the end, we managed to pull it off, even though I would never want to do that ever again!

HIGH LEVEL TIMELINE

When I signed on as UX/UI designer, the project was left with 2 months to completion.

MAKE OF THE TEAM

UX/UI designer, ASP.NET developer, business strategist, and project manager.

KEY GOAL

Deliver MVP on time and deploy a fully functioning application within the project timeline.

MY ROLE

I signed on as an independent contractor, my primary role being that of UX/UI designer, but a week in, I was both UX/UI designer and front-end developer.

Before this project, I had never worked in ASP.NET and had to spend over 30 hours overall getting a crash course on the ASP.NET development environment.

Wearing two hats didn't make my role in the team any easier, standups usually went on for more than 60 minutes at a time, discussing design and development at the same time.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

Since this was a government-linked company, they provided comprehensive truckloads of user research, field reports, internal staff processes reports about the manual process they wanted to digitize.

Thus on the research front, all was well.

WIREFRAMING AND TESTING

No chance of doing that.

There was virtually no time to create wireframes as the firm insisted that we dive straight into UI design - very unorthodox but with the assistance of the business strategist, a UI was designed.

USER INTERFACE DESIGN 

The company CI apart from the logo to be used on the application, was provided. I had to create a modern lightweight but attractive interface.

When it came to this phase, we had gathered a lot of insight and understanding about the users of the application. This helped shape the final user interface design, but the client wanted to see "their" orange EVERYWHERE!

LANDING PAGE

The landing page was actually the first thing I designed and coded, the first week of joining the project.

​

The client wanted something simple, easy to nevigate and included enough information to explain the platform. but not overwhelm them.
